Pelvic imbalance is a common condition and often does not cause any major problems. However, for some it is the lynch-pin that maintains their asymmetrical, poor posture. Many of us have slight leg length differences and this is quite normal due to the fact that we are ‘made in two halves’ form and embryonic development perspective. However, for some this causes an adaptation response where the body tries to correct itself, putting more pressure on some areas rather than others and creating muscle imbalance. This can cause further adaptation as the body tries to cope with a very unbalanced posture.
While men suffer this quite often, women are particularly vulnerable due to the generally larger and more mobile pelvises we tend to have. This is particularly apparent in pregnancy, when the strong sacro-iliac ligaments become lax with the release of ‘relaxin’ hormone to facilitate the baby’s path.
Symptoms of pelvic imbalance:
- Pain around hips, pelvis or lower back
- Sacro-iliac joint problems
- Pregnancy Pain
- Groin Pain
- One hip higher than the other
- Excessive pointing outwards of feet
- Preference to lean on one hip/cross one leg over other/sit with
- legs up to one side
Pelvic imbalance requires a careful and expert diagnosis by a trained professional. It is a very common presentation in clinic and where appropriate, receives careful and expert treatment. Firstly an assessment and analysis is performed to establish how serious the problem is and then, if appropriate, gentle treatment is performed to mobilize structures, balancing body mechanics, and freeing up the structures causing the symptoms.
